If you’ve lost a significant amount of weight, congratulations! You’ve made a huge step in reclaiming your body and your health. Unfortunately, with a great deal of weight loss also comes less appealing outcomes, such as loose and saggy skin.
The skin is an incredible organ. It is very elastic and will stretch and retract as we grow and as we gain or lose weight. Despite this, there is only so much retraction that can take place following extreme weight loss, particularly if the weight loss occurred very quickly.
Here are some tips to help skin retract as much as possible without surgical intervention.
Skin Firming Lotions/Collagen Creams
There are a wide variety of creams and lotions available for firming the skin and helping with elasticity and collagen production. These creams vary in price and quality, but they can produce some noticeable results over time. Some of the most effective formulas contain stem cells from your own adipose tissue.
Water is crucial to your general health and can make your skin more vibrant and elastic. Your overall health influences your skin’s health, and the healthier your skin is, the more it can retract.
Eat Whole Foods
A healthy diet also helps you maintain general good health, and helps you keep your weight from fluctuating and your skin glowing and healthy. By getting plenty of antioxidants, free radicals in the skin (which break down collagen) can be repaired, giving skin the stretch that it needs to spring back after weight loss.
Don’t Use Harsh Soaps
Harsh soaps can dry out your skin and discourage elasticity, so use gentle cleansers with natural ingredients. Some body washes contain low amounts of fragrance and high amounts of natural emollients such as nut oils.
Tanning is bad for your skin in general, and particularly when you’re trying to help your skin regain elasticity, suppleness, and overall health. Do yourself a favor and skip the tanning beds for life. You’ll reduce your risk for skin cancer and be more likely to retain youthful skin as you age. Be sure to use an SPF of 30 or greater whenever you’ll be exposed to the sun for more than 15 minutes (just use it daily)!
An Effective Solution
Even if you do all of these things, sometimes the damage is too great or genetics are simply working against you. Don’t be discouraged! There is a way to fix loose skin.
