Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a very rewarding procedure that can significantly improve a protruding abdomen. Nevertheless, it does have its tradeoffs, namely an horizontal incision that runs the length of the bikini line between the hipbones.

At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York, our experts take special care with our tummy tuck patients to make the incision as inconspicuous as possible in order to minimize scarring.

However, many of our patients also want to know what they can do on their own to help minimize tummy tuck scars.

Tips for Healing Scars after Surgery

Some patients may be candidates for a mini or partial tummy tuck in which less extensive incisions are made. For other patients treated in our abdominoplasty NY centers, however, the full tummy tuck is most appropriate.

In these cases, patients can take efforts to help minimize tummy tuck scars. One of the most important steps in minimizing scars is carefully following the pre- and post-operative instructions provided by our surgeons.

Patients should also note that they must quit smoking for at least two weeks before surgery and should not smoke again.

Creams, Supplements and Natural Remedies for Reducing Scars

Tips for Healing and Reducing Tummy Tuck Scars after SurgeryMany patients use supplements, creams and natural remedies to help minimize scars.

Some believe that taking vitamin E, multivitamins and other supplements can help in this regard, but be sure to talk with the surgeon about all medications you are taking or intend to take before and after surgery.

There are many creams and ointments which patients take to help scars heal, including cortisone creams, antibacterial ointments, retinol creams, cocoa butter, and silicone scar serums or sheets.

Very light massage may also be beneficial in helping scars to heal well. Again, be sure to talk with the surgeon beforehand. Scars are usually at their worst during the first six months after surgery but they will flatten and fade over time.  It takes two full years for the collagen in the skin to rebuild and align itself properly after a skin trauma such as a tummy tuck incision.
