Have you recently lost a lot of weight and now have loose, excess skin around your abdominal region?

This is a very common occurrence. In fact, when people lose a large amount of weight, such as more than 100 pounds, skin can lose its elasticity because it’s been overstretched to accommodate the body’s former size.

After you’ve lost weight, the last thing you want to deal with is droopy skin. Here are a couple of ways to minimize, and in some cases prevent, skin from sagging so that you can flaunt your new and improved body.

Lose Weight Moderately

If you are just beginning your weight lose pursuit, try to lose the weight slowly to allow your skin the chance to “remember” its former size and shrink back. Consult with your doctor before starting any new diet or exercise program.

Do not make extreme dietary changes or to your lifestyle such as liquid fasts or cutting calories dangerously low.  The ideal rate of weight loss is about two pounds per week.

Get on a healthy cardio routine and eat plenty of lean proteins and beans to help fuel muscles and tone up. By toning the muscles underneath your skin, you can actually help minimize or prevent skin from falling away from your muscles and becoming saggy as you lose weight.

Be aware of how you are exercising. If you only do one type of exercise, it can lead to loose skin because not every part of your muscle is being worked. It would be better to have a full body workout than to concentrate on specific areas of your body. Try a cardio class and circuit training with the weight machines 4-5 times a week.

Preventing Loose Skin

If you’ve lost the weight, you should continue to exercise using these specific techniques meant to tighten the skin. You can also tone abdominal muscles by performing crunches, sit-ups, and exercises on a core-strengthening fitness ball.

Be sure to drink a lot of water, at least eight glasses per day, to stay thoroughly hydrated too.

If you have kept up with this routine for at least 6 months and still cannot get your skin to bounce back to its original form, you can try consulting a plastic surgeon about tummy liposuction or even a tummy tuck.

Tummy Tucks

A tummy tuck is sometimes the only effective way to get rid of huge folds of redundant skin. A tummy tuck will tighten loose skin around your abdominal region as well as cinch in the muscles by stitching them together.

A body lift, which sometimes accompanies a tummy tuck for post-bariatric patients, removes extra skin around the hips, thighs, buttocks, and upper legs.
