Could Getting Rid of Belly Fat Keep You Sharper?

We all know that obesity and excessive belly fat is bad for overall health and could cause a shorter lifespan with more health problems. But did you know that belly fat could also be the cause of the decline of cognitive function?

As if you needed even more motivation to exercise and eat well, a new study suggests that losing belly fat through diet and exercise or surgery can reverse these negative effects.

Risk Factors for Cognitive Decline

A 2012 study showed that people who were overweight and also had metabolic abnormalities (such as high blood sugar) had a significantly higher rate of cognitive decline then their peers of a healthy weight with no metabolic abnormalities. Over a 10-year period, the overweight study participants declined 22.5% faster than participants of normal weight.

New Research

Though the findings from the 2012 study are discouraging for those struggling with weight, the good news is that a new study by the Medical College of Georgia suggests that weight loss may help reverse these negative effects.

Mice who lost 15-20% of their body weight, through either diet or surgical fat removal, experienced repair of some cognitive abilities. The researchers emphasized that weight loss through liposuction surgery is not a viable option for people.

However, liposuction is a good option for spot-reduction of excess fat (up to a certain degree) to support an ongoing, healthy lifestyle filled with nutritious, low calorie foods and regular exercise.

Natural Methods for Losing Belly Fat

The best way to lose belly fat, of course, is through a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise, a balanced diet, proper hydration, stress management, and good sleep habits. Gradual fat loss is best for lasting results and gives the skin its best chance of retracting as best as is possible, hopefully preventing excess skin from remaining. While losing belly fat this way can be a challenge, it is the best way to not only achieve a flatter stomach, but a healthier body overall.

Surgical Methods for Fat Loss

If you’re struggling to lose belly fat, don’t despair. There is more than one way to get a flat stomach. Some people are excellent candidates for tummy liposuction, or direct removal of fat cells from the abdominal area. If minor loose skin is an issue, laser liposuction is an excellent option, as the heat from the laser tightens skin as it removes fat from the treated areas.

Abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck surgery, is another popular option for getting rid of belly fat (under the skin) and loose skin. A tummy tuck is ideal for getting rid of excess skin and can also be used to restore stretched-out stomach muscles to their original position for a taut and slim stomach.
