Detoxifying your body, getting a flatter stomach, and boosting energy are all alleged benefits of juice cleanses. But is it really safe to subsist only on fruit and vegetable juice for several days–or longer?
Read on for safety information and tips about how to juice cleanse safely.
Are They Safe?
While healthy adults should be able to take on short juice fasts without problems, some health professionals are still concerned about the safety of juice cleanses.
They can be dangerous for people with certain medical conditions (which is why it’s so important to discuss your plans with a doctor before trying a juice cleanse), and can cause mild negative effects, such as headaches, dizziness, weakness, and hunger.
Even if you are extremely healthy, talk to your doctor before maintaining a juice cleanse for more than a few days at a time.
Examine Your Motivations
Before you decide to undergo a juice cleanse, think about your reasons. Are you simply trying to lose weight? Kick the caffeine addiction? Get more energy? If you’re looking to lose weight, then a juice cleanse probably isn’t the best option.
Remember that your body does a naturally good job of flushing toxins from your system, and adjusting your lifestyle in other ways (regulating sleep, better diet, and consistent exercise) may be a better solution to sluggishness and other problems.
Consider the Downsides
Juice cleanses can cause you to lose muscle mass if continued for more than a few days, and weight lost during a short cleanse will be nearly all water weight (which will come back after the fast). Cleanses are also not particularly fun, often causing mild side effects such as constipation due to lack of fiber and proving unappetizing after the first few “meals”.
